About this Event

🌲 Unlock the Future of Timber Design with Timber Tech Connect! 🌲

Here comes our 3rd event in collaboration between TWIG, Fast + Epp, and CAWP. This series of dynamic events is hosted at Concept Lab, an innovative R&D space located within Fast + Epp's Vancouver headquarters.

Timber Tech Connect offers an up-close look at the latest innovations in timber design and the individuals driving progress in wood-based design, engineering, architecture, and construction. Through these events, we aim to provide a platform for networking, learning, and exploring the possibilities of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), sustainability and low-carbon construction, building systems and the methodologies of mass timber construction and pre-fabrication.
Presenters

‣ Jason Chiu - TWIG Organizer and Managing Director at the UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing will present findings from a recent tour to Sweden, where he visited leading manufacturers of prefabricated panelized and modular building systems as well as manufacturers of mass-timber building components.

‣ Brandon Sullivan from Concept Lab will be sharing details of the recently announced Timber-Concrete node, launched at the International Mass Timber Conference. Timber-Concrete Node (TCN) leverages a simple kit of parts to make easy and economical connections in post & beam timber structures.

‣ Chris Naychuk from Mitsui Homes will present on acoustical research being conducted with CAWP on a mid-ply shear wall assembly.
Food and Drinks will be provided as part of your ticket.

About

We hosted the inaugural event of this timber innovation series in September 2023 with an incredible turnout, and we greatly appreciated the conversations that emerged at our round table discussion leading us to launch our next series of events to take place quarterly. The events we are planning are based around the following themes:

  • Sustainability + Building Performance
  • Building systems + Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Offsite Construction, Project planning + Integration
  • Project case studies

Our purpose with these events is to establish a consistent series that brings together experts from various fields, and those eager to learn more about timber construction. As the mass timber and pre-fab industries grow, our mission is to support individuals and firms throughout the innovation process, equipping them with the knowledge needed to excel in wood-based construction. Additionally, our goal is to inspire you by showcasing case-study timber projects from local firms and manufacturers based right here in British Columbia.

The Wood Innovation Group—TWIG, is a network & community of wood-related professionals committed to advancing innovation in BC's value-added wood product industry.

Concept Lab is located at Fast + Epp’s headquarters in Vancouver, B.C. The space provides design professionals, academia, industry associations, and innovators alike the ability to enliven their design ideas. Concept Lab provides access for Fast + Epp staff to brainstorm and develop concepts, a full shop to fabricate models, prototypes, and mock-ups, a 100,000lb loading frame for structural testing, and digital suites to develop design visualizations, software, and design tools

Simply put, Concept Lab provides the resources needed to bring your idea from a napkin sketch to reality.

The Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) is Canada’s national centre for education, training and technical assistance for the wood products manufacturing industry. CAWP offers a wide range of training courses, professional e-learning programs, in-plant training, product development, and manufacturing improvement services. We also conduct and coordinate applied research and development and support the award-winning B.Sc. in Wood Products Processing and its cooperative education program
