About this Event
New York based drummer Tima Volozh has put together a quartet that is not only a collective of world-class musicians, but a band with a distinct concept, aesthetic, and sound.
Much of the group’s character comes from the musicians themselves. Currently featuring Timo Vollbrecht on saxophones, Brad Shepik on guitar, Marshal Herridge on bass, Tima’s band first came together in New York in 2022 and has since performed and recorded together on numerous occasions, most frequently at Nublu.
Timo Vollbrecht, closely associated with the ECM sound, performs and records with Theo Bleckmann, Ben Monder, Ralph Alessi and Chris Tordini; currently Director of Jazz Studies at Brown University. Brad Shepik is a veteran of the band known for his work with Paul Motian, Dave Douglas’ Tiny Bell Trio, Bob Brookmeyer, Charlie Haden and Carla Bley, channels Paul Motian’s energy, offering his unique and powerful presence.
The centerpiece of the band’s repertoire is Tima’s arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Born and raised in Russia, Tima was exposed to Stravinsky’s music from an early age. Recorded on Tima’s “excellent debut release” (All About Jazz), Jubilee, the piece “Adoration of the Earth — a brilliantly realized meditation on the opening of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring” (DownBeat) was featured as Track of the Month on All About Jazz.
Another major influence on the band’s sound is Paul Motian, best known as a drummer for Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. In New York, Tima connected and performed with musicians who played in Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, notably Steve Cardenas, Brad Shepik, and Jerome Harris — the latter two appearing on Jubilee. Motian’s spirit and aesthetic permeate Tima’s music, with Tima’s arrangements of Motian’s compositions forming a foundation of the quintet’s concept and sound.
