▶︎OUR TEACHER ◀︎
Michael Parmenter has had a decades-long career as a leading figure in contemporary dance in New Zealand. He has created many works for his own Commotion Company as well for Footnote Dance, The Royal New Zealand Ballet Company and the New Zealand Dance Company. A particular feature of Michael’s choreography has been his innovative partner dance choreography and during his long career as a dance teacher he has developed the partner-dance improvisation form Piloting/TACTICS, which featured strongly in his celebrated work OrphEus: a dance opera, created in 2018 for the New Zealand Dance Company.
A summary of his work in this area can be found here: https://www.thearts.co.nz/artists/michael-parmenter
More recently Michael’s interests have shifted towards social dance. He has danced tango for two decades and he has been exploring other Latin dances as well as Swing, Balboa and Blues dance. In 2019 Michael began Balfolk Auckland. Balfolk is a revival of various European traditional partner and group dances. In 2021 Balfolk Auckland presented the hugely successful , a sold out event, New Moon Folk Bal as part of the Auckland Arts Festival. Michael was the 2022 Caroline Plummer Fellow in Community Dance at Otago University where he established Balfolk Dunedin and in 2023 Balfolk Wellington joined this growing movement.

In 2023 Michael joined with Dunedin dancer Kate Grace to form Balfolk Aotearoa. Michael and Kate have appeared as teachers and dance callers at numerous Folk festivals and have created Folk Bals for various Arts Festivals including Wanaka Festival of Colours and Oamaru Victorian Heritage Festival. Michael’s wide experience as a dance teacher means that his instruction is both clear and detailed and is articulated in a way that facilitates the learning experience.
