Have a go at throwing on the pottery wheel whilst listening to Northern Soul classics in this fabulous workshop!
About this Event

Get ready to spin the pottery wheel! We’re bringing the sweet sounds of Northern Soul to the pottery studio for a unique, soulful workshop. Northern Soul and the pottery industry share a common heartbeat: the grit, passion, and craftsmanship of the industrial North. Stoke-On-Trent is famous for pottery and Northern Soul, so just as the dancers at The Golden Torch club Stoke–on-Trent found freedom on the dance floor, we’re finding it at the wheel.

The Experience

During the workshop, you’ll be taught how to throw bowls and cylinders, to the sound of a curated playlist of Rare Soul and Motown classics (unfortunatelywe can't play vinyl in the pottery studio so the music will be streamed!).

Whether you're an absolute beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll leave with work to be proud of. You will be offered as much or as little help as you want. This event is throwing only so places are limited!

Event Details

  • Theme: Northern Soul music & throwing on a potter’s wheel.
  • What to bring: enthusiasm! And an apron. If you have long hair you might want to tie it back. False or long nails will hinder your ability to throw on a wheel effectively.
  • Results: You’ll create your own unique pieces of thrown pottery. Choose your best three pieces to keep. Due to the long drying process and the need for two firings, your work will be ready to collect 4 to 8 weeks after the session. You will be contacted when your work is ready to collect. Your work is food safe. It is recommended that you avoid putting it in the oven, microwave or dishwasher.

Please note - this workshop is only suitable for adults 18+

If you have any access, mobility or other health issues which you think could impact your experience of the workshop, do to let us know in advance and we will aim to make reasonable adjustments where possible, to ensure you have a positive experience.

We request resonable notice of at least 2 working days to be able to action any adjustments.

Any information disclosed to Swarthmore will be relayed to the workshop facilitator.
