Human Towers in London: A Three-Day Analogue Photography Experience
An event that brings together film, culture, and heritage. Join us for a three-day photography experience that will take you to Spain without leaving London.
Have you ever heard of the Human Towers? In Catalonia, Spain, communities unite to form castells: towers of people that rise high above the crowd as a powerful display of trust, teamwork, and tradition. On this special occasion, Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls are bringing this unique cultural spectacle to London.
To guide us through this tradition, we will have the honour of hosting Marta Arjona, a Spanish photographer (recently awarded the Ilford Grant) and a member of Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls. Marta will be travelling to London to share her first-hand experience and knowledge of castells, and to teach participants how to document this tradition on film.
Event Schedule
Thursday 18 September - Meeting at St Paul's Underground Station
Theory session with Marta; learn the history of castells and the techniques behind documenting them.
Friday 19 September - Meeting at Charter School Bermondsey
Apply your knowledge in practice during the rehearsal, with guidance on photographing the process.
Saturday 20 September - Meeting at Potters Fields Park
Join us as we document the official performance together.
