About this Event
Join artist Margarita Jane Arguedas for a hands-on workshop exploring the deep interconnections between landscape, memory, and material.
Beginning with a short guided walk to Portland’s Old Port Square to Arguedas’ site-specific art installation , participants will attune into the shoreline as a living map—shaped by tides, migration routes, trade, and stories stretching back thousands of years.
Back in the studio, participants will experiment with knit fabric through a process central to Arguedas’ practice: deconstructing the material by hand to reveal its fundamental threads and reflecting on the interconnected web of placemaking.
No experience needed! Bring a curiosity and a willingness to explore through walking, making, and reflection.
was commissioned by Old Port Square in partnership with TEMPOart.
About the artist
Margarita Jane Arguedas hand-deconstructs knit fabric to its fundamental connecting threads, weaving her magic through sculpture installations and paintings - a process she’s explored and developed for 15 years.
‘BUOYANCY’
Portland’s Old Port is host to dynamic ecosystems among a shoreline of memory, where tides carry stories reaching back to 11,000 BCE.
This fabric installation is a reflection on its waters and the countless threads woven along the shore—wildlife tracing ancient migration patterns, vessels crossing in trade and lives entwined across time.
Layered threads echo vast webs of interconnection that bind past to present and harbor to horizon, nestled within frames reflective of the vibrant lobster buoys that are iconic symbols of Maine’s heritage.
The work is both map and memory: a living fabric that stretches beyond centuries into what is still to come.
