Threads of Power, Politics and Belonging: Gobanimo Journal Launch
Join us for the launch of Politics, Power and Belonging, Gobanimo’s second journal issue, which takes a necessary look at the forces shaping Somali society today. This edition engages with a range of urgent questions - from rethinking precolonial gender and class dynamics, to examining the constraints on Islamic governance in Somalia, to exploring identity as a space of ongoing negotiation, struggle and reinvention.
To mark the launch, we’ll be hosting an evening of critical conversations and collective reflection through a series of interactive discussions and workshops. Together we will aim to push beyond reductive narratives looking to engage with the complex and evolving realities that structure Somali life and politics, focussing on how identity, belonging and authority have been shaped over time, as well as how they continue to be reimagined today. The grand question of how power operates across Somali social, political, and cultural life, both historically and in the present.
Whether you’re an academic, student, professional or simply curious about Somali issues this is the space for you!
Printed copies of the journal will also be available to purchase on the night.
