Watercolor is great for layering in the negative spaces—those pesky areas between objects. In this workshop, we will begin with an abstract underpainting and save as much of it as we desire in the object area. Students will practice how to build layers in the negative spaces while keeping the original underpainting in the positive shapes. This method is a wonderful way to preserve that beautiful freshness that watercolor is so known for.
Once students understand the concept of building layers in the negative spaces, they can apply the same method in other media, such as colored pencil, oil, acrylic, pastel, etc. The challenge for beginners is leaving the positive shapes alone until the absolute end, but with some practice, the final results are well worth it.
For more experienced painters, Susan will share her expertise, tips, and tricks for painting with watercolor.
Susan loves to have fun with her students, so be prepared to laugh. There will be two demonstrations and time for students to work on layers between demos.
