About this Event
At present, cuts to vital social infrastructure–including SNAP–coupled with sky-high costs for food, utilities, and housing are squeezing residents of Western Mass dry and making life impossible. “Food Security” can be defined as having enough food that is nutritious, culturally relevant, and meets someone’s dietary needs and preferences without sacrificing other basic needs. How can this be possible when wages are rising only 1-3% per year, but rent is often increasing 30, 40, or 50% each year?
The struggles to keep our neighbors fed and keep our neighbors housed are intimately connected.
Join representatives from Riquezas del Campo, Underline Farm, and local tenant organizing for a panel discussion on the connections between land access, housing justice, and food sovereignty.
This campaign teaches us how people facing land, housing, or food insecurity can build toward community control over their own resources, and how homeowners and resourced community members can support those efforts to build a more just society for all. It also asks us to consider how we disrupt the cycle of land theft and colonization through our current policies, and acknowledges that we all exist on stolen Indigenous land.
This conversation will be facilitated by Springfield No One Leaves and Grow Food Northampton with time for Q&A at the end.
