Save the date! Thirst for Knowledge September 30th. Prof. Stephen Robertson from the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Otago, will be joining us to present: Precisely-tuned Māori genomics. He Kākano: The Aotearoa Variome Project.
While great strides are occurring to bring genomic tools into many branches of healthcare, many of the instruments are tuned using European and Asian genomic data. Evidence suggests that populations whose genomes are understudied in genomic science are under-served by medical genomics and are at risk of under-diagnosis, misdiagnosis and even treatment harms. Guided and governed by Māori experts in tikanga and Māori ethical frameworks we have prospectively assembled a resource that reflects genomic variation across modern day Maoridom that will bring precision to genomic healthcare for people with Māori ancestry while not threatening their cultural safety.
