About this Event

Field Collective and Third Quadrant Design are hosting a meet-and-greet for architects, mechanical engineers, building scientists, building analysts, and envelope consultants at Third Space at UBC. Adam Rysanek will give a tour of the student-built hempcrete building on campus and show off the latest performance data for the project.

For those who don't know, this project is one of the first hempcrete public buildings in BC, constructed for the Solar Decathlon in 2023. The properties of hempcrete, a nonstructural material (so far), eliminate the need for vapour barriers, insulation, and rain screens. Hempcrete is poured around a traditional light wood framed structure and can simply be finished with plaster on the exterior for weatherproofing. Its thickness provides the necessary insulation. Its higher thermal mass reduces heating and cooling demands by lowering temperature fluctuations. It can transform building construction by reducing our dependency on high-cost, complex building systems. Oh yes, and the lime in the mix absorbs carbon over time, making it carbon-negative. It's a magic material whose only downside is it's not readily available. Apparently, there is a higher value use for the plant. Who knows.
