About therapeutic writing
Therapeutic writing is a playful, accessible practice that encourages self-enquiry through journalling and creative writing. My workshops are designed to empower actively by offering a strength-based approach for creatively inclined people, specifically those who find comfort and safety in language. The intention here is to cultivate new beliefs about the self, others and the world in a space of presence and compassion, fostered through the joyful and transformative potential of creative practice. This model emphasises the process of writing over the product, with a focus on our present-moment experience, and encourages participants to find meaning in their current environment and life situation.
For many of us, experiences that discourage us from valuing our wisdom, creativity and humanity are common enough that we start listening. Therapeutic writing is the practice of restoring value to these experiences, while also maintaining that once an experience has passed, all that remains is a story—an artform rather than a reality. By tapping into the wisdom we have at our fingertips, we might begin to integrate the things that have happened to us and step into the world differently, free of past and future and wholly committed to the present—the place where we come into fresh existence again and again.
Why do therapeutic writing?
The benefits of writing are widely recognised to include the refining and articulation of difficult emotions to facilitate their release; the cultivation of wellbeing through joyful expression and the invoking of positive feeling; and the channelling of creativity that transcends the ego to reach a deeper sense of knowing. My workshops are taught from personal experience and with deep gratitude for this transformative practice, which continues to bring stability and clarity to my relationships and inner life. They are designed to help participants move from the reactive mind, which responds unconsciously to internal and external stimuli, to the creative mind, which acts purposefully from a state of imagination and possibility.
We cannot act intentionally while we are on autopilot, and therapeutic writing provides us with the tools to meet situations with awareness, to process them in our own space, and to find words to communicate our experiences with others, if we feel to. Through this process of compassionate witnessing, we know ourselves not as the story or the storyteller but as the one who listens—even when the stories are our own.
