On one level, yoga is exercise. Many of us have found ourselves in fitness centers on a bicycle or treadmill watching a TV screen in front of the room. Exercise can be done this way. The mind can be distracted to avoid the tedium, boredom or discomfort that comes with building muscle strength and endurance. While yoga can be done as an exercise, many yoga teachers and practitioners have found that there are deeper benefits to be obtained from the practice that go beyond the physical work.
Skillful practitioners work with the mind and heart as well as the body in their practice. This constitutes a more holistic approach that generates positive mental and emotional effects, as well as strength and flexibility in the body. History tells us that yoga was originally a meditation and Pranayama based practice and physical exercise was incorporated only to enhance the meditation and breathing techniques. Athletic, postural yoga is a modern addition to the practice. This is evident from the high percentage of postures in the ancient texts that were seated and introvertive, and the small number of postures in those same texts that were standing, or where the attention needed to be outside for balance. It is also easy to see that in these same texts much of the instruction was dedicated to pranayama, meditation, and lifestyle (off the mat practices) than to asanas. By bringing elements from these older yoga traditions into our classes, we, as teachers, can lead students into deeper, transformative, and more rewarding yoga experiences.
Yoga Teachers from all traditions are encouraged to join us for this program. This course provides 20 YA CEUs.
