Join us on Thursday, September 18 at 6:00 PM at the Alliance Française de San Francisco for a powerful performance of Richard, a reimagined take on Shakespeare’s Richard III by acclaimed French artist Antony De Azevedo.
Prepare to be transported into the haunting underground of the Paris metro, where power, madness, and fantasy collide. In this gripping 75-minute two-hander, Antony De Azevedo stars alongside the mesmerizing Poppée Bashung, in a production that fuses Shakespearean tragedy with urban surrealism.
Set in a fictional metro station called Pouvoir ("Power"), Richard tells the story of a homeless man’s descent into delusion after finding a discarded king cake crown. Metro announcements become divine omens, and a mysterious female commuter morphs into every character from Shakespeare’s world — from Lady Anne to Death herself.
With dreamlike scenography by Citronelle Dufay, this daring play is as much a visual experience as it is a theatrical one — inspired by filmmakers like David Lynch and Luc Besson.
