Program Description:

Islamic art is a vast and diverse tradition that spans over 1,400 years and stretches across continents—from Spain and North Africa to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Rather than depicting human figures, Islamic art emphasizes the use of intricate geometric patterns, calligraphy, arabesque, and architectural ornamentation. These elements often combine to express unity, harmony, and the infinite nature of
creation.

Today, contemporary Islamic artists now spans the entire globe, continuing this legacy while also exploring modern themes such as identity, migration, spirituality, and social justice. Many blend traditional techniques with new media and global influences, challenging stereotypes and expanding our understanding of what Islamic art can be in the 21st century.

While Milwaukee may not be known for Islamic art, opportunities to engage with it can be found in local galleries, festivals, university exhibitions, and community arts initiatives. These spaces often highlight artists whose work draws on Islamic aesthetics or themes, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and appreciation.

Alec Story is the former Executive Director of the Islamic Art Society in Houston. Through this presentation, he will explore how Islamic art continues to evolve, bridging past and present, and how we can experience its beauty and meaning right here in our own community.
