Film Noir ClassicsTHE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (1944)
Monday, March 16th at 7:30 PM
Hosted by professor Foster Hirsch
One of the defining works of early American film noir, filmmaking legend Fritz Lang’s The Woman in the Window helped to establish the genre’s expressionistic foundations. Edward G. Robinson delivers a superb performance as a mild-mannered professor whose chance encounter with the alluring subject of a shop-window portrait (Joan Bennett) spirals into violence, secrecy, and moral unravelling. As blackmail, paranoia, and a tightening police investigation close in, Lang’s elegant use of mirrors, shadows, and shifting power dynamics transforms this seemingly accidental crime into a masterclass in noir tension and psychological ambiguity.
