Olya Prohorova’s “Soviet Jazz” presents beloved songs from the Soviet era in a fresh and intimate jazz setting. Behind the Iron Curtain, composers created a remarkable body of music that blends elements of classical tradition, folk melody, and jazz harmony. This program revisits those works through contemporary arrangements that highlight their lyricism and emotional depth. The performance offers a preview of Prohorova’s upcoming album, scheduled for release in November 2026. The ensemble features some of Chicago’s leading jazz musicians: Millie Ahearn (trumpet), Aaron Shapiro (guitar), Kitt Lyles (bass), Jonathan Marks (drums), and Olya Prohorova (violin and vocals).
