Indie-rock stalwarts The Weather Machine return home this spring to celebrate the release of their fifth studio record, Love & Science Fiction, with a special hometown performance at the Aladdin Theater on May 23rd, featuring Portland's own World Soul genre-benders, Reb & The Good News.
Recorded in Sellwood with producer Gus Berry, the album brings together the band’s signature lyrical intelligence and lush, adventurous sound. Love & Science Fiction was written by frontman Slater Smith after relocating to Wellington, New Zealand, where the songs took shape on nature walks and quiet evenings far from home. These new works are a deep and cozy exploration of spiritual bargaining, touching on themes of romance, gratitude, and letting go to examine how we use sometimes-treacherous but always-beautiful fantasies to navigate life.
Over two weeks in Sellwood, Smith reunited with longtime collaborators Tim Karplus (guitar + keys), Luke Hoffman (drums), André Zapata (bass), and Noah Bernstein (sax + clarinet) to arrange and record what started out as voice memo lyrics and melodies stored on Smith's phone. The result is something special. Drawing inspiration from Joe Cocker, The Cranberries, and Andrew Bird, Love & Science Fiction feels nostalgic and modern, an album both whimsical and profound, and quintessentially Pacific Northwest.
Rarely do The Weather Machine’s local members reunite in one place, making this Aladdin Theater performance a uniquely Portland moment and a celebration of enduring creative friendship. With Love & Science Fiction, the band delivers their most ambitious and heartfelt record to date – a work of imagination, gratitude, and coming home.
