In an age when communities, universities, and governments grapple with what kind of language should be allowed, the book "The War on Words: 10 Arguments Against Free Speech—And Why They Fail" offers a timely and provocative roadshow back to the principles of the First Amendment. Join American Public Square, the Johnson County Center for the Arts and Heritage, and the Johnson County Library for an in-depth talk with author Nadine Strossen, former ACLU president, one of the nation's leading First Amendment scholars, and moderator of our April 2nd program on free speech. This event will analyze the book's rebuttals to the most prevalent censorship arguments today—from "word is violence" to "hate speech is not free speech"—and explore what is truly at stake as we narrow the boundaries of acceptable language. This discussion will challenge assumptions from all sides of the political arena and shed light on why open exploration remains essential to a healthy democracy.
