This fascinating lecture is delivered by John Dawkins, who is a specialist in the subject of the Victorian Asylum. The popular image of these hospitals is that of dark and frightening places, with experimental treatments for mental health problems that the world hardly understood. There were, however, some beacons of hope amongst doctors who were passionate about easing the pain and distress of patients locked away in asylums, and who attempted to understand the complex working of the human brain. This lecture throws a bright light on what really went on behind some of those doors.
