About this Event
Get ready for a spectacular Wandsworth Heritage Festival deepdive into one of the borough's most treasured locations as Tooting-born Lynda Cazeaux reveals the astounding history of our much-loved Tooting Market. At the centre of Tooting life for almost a century, its story has until now never been properly told. Lynda's extensive research over the past three years has uncovered some extraordinary stories; the eels, the garments, the fires, the patter... the famous names who passed through and the people who have pitched in from every corner of the world to make this such an enduring and pivotal place. Many of her remarkable finds will also hopefully be on display in an exhibition. If all that's not enough, then feel the vibe and get out and discover the wider area as local history champ Geoff gives you a taste of 'Planet Tooting' on one of his smash-hit Walks.
If you haven't visited before, look out for the distinctive '1930' entrance to the Market on Tooting High Street now also bearing an historic blue plaque. There is another entrance on Totterdown Street. Each one takes you straight to where Lynda kicks-off her talk at 2pm in front of the big screen in the Market Plaza Yard next to Boom Bap Burger. Geoff's Walk will start from here at 3pm.
Lynda has been involved in many local heritage initiatives from commemorating the Hazelhurst Road V2 bomb to 'Tooting Threads' and 'Sugar and Spice' with 'Meet and Make Spaces'. Geoff runs his community history project alongside his job as a graphic designer. It involves Guided Walks and Talks, working with schools and putting up plaques. Over the years a trail of these have emerged across Wandsworth including a unique double, celebrating the contribution of migrants, one on both entrances to Tooting Market. If you want to contribute to our work and see more plaques going up please make a donation on the day!
