The Anatomy of a Killer Bit - How to Build 3–5 Minutes That Gets You Remembered
About this Event
Event Photos

Most comedians can write jokes. Far fewer know how to build a bit that maintains momentum, controls energy, and lands cleanly from start to finish.

Bookers don’t book potential. They book comedians who sound confident, clear, and complete on stage.

This workshop breaks down the craft and performance mechanics behind a strong 3–5 minute bit. The focus is not on writing new jokes, but on understanding how effective bits are structured, refined, and delivered so your material feels professional, memorable, and bookable.

This session is designed for comedians who already have material and want practical tools to make it work better and more consistently.

What You’ll Walk Away With
  • A clear framework for structuring and refining a 3–5 minute bit
  • Tools for improving flow, pacing, and momentum
  • Techniques for connecting jokes so laughs build instead of reset
  • Strategies for tagging and punch expansion
  • Actionable feedback you can apply immediately

Who This Workshop Is For
  • Comedians with existing material who want it tighter and more effective
  • Comics getting laughs but not leaving strong impressions
  • Performers preparing material for showcases, festivals, or club bookings
  • Anyone looking to strengthen one dependable, repeatable bit

Agenda
THE OPENER - WINNING THE FIRST 15-SECONDS

Info: An exploration of why the opening moments of a bit set audience expectations and determine engagement. We’ll examine real-world examples and identify common patterns that make openers effective or ineffective. Attendees will refine an opening line with a focus on clarity, tone, and confidence.

BUILDING THE BIT: STRUCTURE, MOMENTUM, FLOW

Info: A breakdown of how strong 3–5 minute bits are structured to maintain momentum from start to finish. This section focuses on shaping material so ideas build, energy stays consistent, and the bit feels complete rather than fragmented. Attendees will evaluate the overall flow of their material and identify where momentum strengthens or stalls.

TAGGING & PUNCH EXPANSION

Info: An overview of how effective comedians extend strong jokes to build bigger laughs without sacrificing clarity. This section focuses on recognizing expansion opportunities, understanding escalation, and knowing when a joke has reached its natural endpoint.

LIVE HOTSEAT AND PERSONALIZED COACHING

Info: Attendees will have the (optional) opportunity to perform a short section of material and receive focused, real-time feedback. Coaching will center on clarity, structure, pacing, and delivery, with the goal of providing practical adjustments that can be applied immediately on stage.

FINAL POLISH: MAKING THE BIT REPEATABLE

Info: A look at what separates a bit that “works” from one that feels finished and reliable across different rooms. This section focuses on refining clarity, tightening language, and strengthening endings so material can be repeated confidently in showcases, festivals, and booking situations.
