The McGinn family started their 90-acre pistachio orchard in 1980. Today, the orchard has over 12,500 trees. 14 acres (about twice the area of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool) of grapes are also grown at Pistachio Tree Ranch and 18 different varieties of wine are made at McGinn's Arena Blanca Winery on site. In 2008, a memorial to the founder, Thomas McGinn, was built.
Highway 70 from Las Cruces to Alamogordo was completed in 1938 and runs across southern New Mexico, from Lordsburg east to Las Cruces along I-10, and northward to Alamogordo, Roswell and Clovis. We will be passing White Sands National Park which covers 275 square miles (about the area of Austin, Texas) with an ocean of white, gypsum dunes—the largest gypsum dune field in the world.
