“In my opinion, The Toasters are to American ska from the 1980s onward what The Specials were to the U.K. in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and what The Skatalites were to Jamaica in the 1960s. The Toasters were innovators, creators, and architects of the sound, pushing ska in a fresh direction and blending it with distinctly American influences. Just as Byron Lee & The Dragonaires helped bring professionalism and polish to Jamaican ska, The Toasters built a platform that allowed countless bands to follow. Many of those bands went on to great heights. That’s the thing about giants, you stand on their shoulders.” Heather Augustyn, author of Ska: An Oral History
Formed on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1981, The Toasters are the longest-running American ska band and one of the most influential forces in the genre’s global history.
Bridging the gap between the UK’s 2-Tone movement and the American ska explosion of the 1990s, The Toasters helped ignite what became known as the Third Wave of Ska. Their impact extended beyond the stage when they founded Moon Ska Records, the legendary label that introduced and supported dozens of bands during ska’s worldwide revival.
Now entering their 45th year, The Toasters are still accelerating, not slowing down. With an international all-star lineup and a relentless touring schedule, the band continues to bring their high-energy sound to audiences across the globe.
Few bands in any genre can match their longevity, influence, and work ethic.
