Join the community on Small Business Saturday to shop local and shop small, by shopping Native Made.On November 30, 2024, the Native Made Market will host its third gathering, bringing together Indigenous artists, entrepreneurs, educators, and supporters to immerse attendees in Native cultures in a meaningful, engaging and impactful way.
This year, the event will be held at High Falls, overlooking the Genesee River, located at 60 Brown's Race, Rochester, NY 14614. There is free street and garage parking available at the High Falls garage. Native Made founder Angelina Hilton shares “The fact that we’re on Haudenosaunee land, which is home of six different nations, what’s more local and small than honoring, celebrating and supporting the original inhabitants of this land?" Hilton says. "So helping to bring visibility to the cultures from around this specific area is truly important." The market not only celebrates small businesses but also their deep-rooted origins.
In past years, visitors have had the opportunity to explore a diverse array of Native art, accessories, apparel, leather goods, sculptures, beadwork, and more. Esteemed speakers such as Angela Ferguson from Braiding the Sacred, Trish Corcoran and Ronalyn Pollack from the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee in Rochester, New York, Kendall Scott from RIT's Native Future Stewards Program, along with storyteller Perry Ground and several more, have all significantly enriched the exchange of knowledge and fostered reciprocal engagement. Artist Cliff Redeye III (Seneca), who participated in the 2023 market, shared with Spectrum One News regarding the educational significance of the event. He emphasized that each booth offers insight into the diverse nations and personal narratives of the participants. Redeye explains that attendees inevitably gain valuable knowledge and understanding, regardless of whether they make purchases.
To foster inclusivity, the event welcomes allies' participation through donations and in-kind contributions for door prizes. Additionally, the market will be ASL interpreted and live-streamed to enhance accessibility. With its vibrant artwork and engaging discussions, the market provides a unique opportunity for communities to build relationships and support one another.
