A spotlight on the terahertz region: revealing the emerging applications and challenges in this lesser-known part of the electromagnetic spectrum

Abstract

Compared to the well-known microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, the terahertz region is relatively unexplored and, arguably, underexploited in terms of consumer and industrial applications. This is, in part, due to the challenges associated with generating and detecting the terahertz light. However, there exists significant promise for its use in applications such as sensing, non-destructive material evaluation and next generation communications. This talk will explore these applications and describe the challenges that still exist for the full commercialisation of terahertz technology.

Speaker: Prof Andrew Gallant

Andrew Gallant is a Professor in Electronic Engineering at Durham University. He has published extensively in the area of micro- and nanofabricated devices over the past two decades. Professor Gallant has a longstanding interest in the development of microfabricated materials which can be used as components for the focusing, filtering and steering of terahertz frequency radiation. He led the EU funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network, Notedev (Novel Terahertz Devices), which was formed from a consortium of academic and industrial partners to train early career physicists and device engineers in the field of terahertz technology.
