About this Event
For some 300 years, much of what is now No. 5, High Street, Stevenage, was a high status inn, one of several in Hatfield, Welwyn and Baldock vying for the custom of wealthy travellers moving up and down the Great North Road. This talk contrasts the development of these inns, the Swan in particular, with those in St Albans. Even though they are just a few miles apart, there are surprising differences.
Jon Mein has been a member of the Society for seventeen years and its newsletter editor for the last six. His book about the many inns and public houses in St Albans is now much closer to publication than it was when he last talked to the Society.
