About this Event
Bodegas Luis Cañas has been at the heart of Rioja since 1928, though their contemporary story began in 1970 when Luis Cañas became the first winemaker in Rioja Alavesa to bottle his young wine, rather than sell it in bulk. This estate is comprised of some of the region’s best and highest altitude vineyards, where the soil is poor and produces small bunches, perfect for making highly concentrated Rioja wines. Vineyards are split into hundreds of individual plots, planted with gnarly old bush vines on chalky clay soils, sheltered under the magnificent Sierra de Cantabria range. In 2016, Juan Luis, son of Luis Cañas opened Bodegas Amaren in the neighbouring village of Samaniego, and named his son, Jon Cañas, winemaker. Bodegas Luis Cañas and Bodegas Amaren have played an enormous role in shaping the Alavesa’s and Rioja’s modern incarnation.
This is a very exciting opportunity to delve deeper into the world of fine Rioja wine. Luis Cañas head sommelier, Oscar Cardenas will be talking us through 6 white and red Riojas produced from their high altitude vinyards in Rioja Alavesa.
We will be tasting:
