The Strengths of a Leader
A Two-Day Senior Leadership Residential Retreat with Dr Roger Bretherton
Thursday 18th July to Friday 19th July 2024

Introduction

The Royal Foundation of St Katharine have been working with the School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln to co-create a strengths-based retreat for senior leaders. This two-day residential retreat will draw upon Character Strengths Psychology to provide evidence-based insights and practical exercises on how to lead authentically and effectively. It will introduce the 24 positive qualities of character – like wisdom, self-control, gratitude and love – shown by thousands of scientific studies to create a flourishing life and productive work, and demonstrate how using our own unique character strengths can change not only our mood state, but the whole social system in which we lead.

In this retreat you will learn how to:

- Lead effectively and authentically by using your unique strengths fingerprint

- Address challenging leadership situations skilfully by drawing on strengths

- Enhance the wellbeing of you and your team with strengths-based resilience

- Integrate strengths perspectives across the teams and the system in which you work

- Use reflection and mindfulness to create the space for wise leadership

Dr Roger Bretherton is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln. He worked in Adult Mental Health in the NHS for over a decade, in clinical practice, management and psychological therapies training. His research centres on Character Strengths, the positive qualities of character (such as gratitude, wisdom, hope, curiosity, kindness and so on) related to wellbeing. In his consultancy work, he has delivered coaching, keynotes and workshops to leaders in the public and private sectors, in the spheres of health, education, business and the charity sector.
