COURSE DESCRIPTION

S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss infants at risk for hypoglycemia and the initial intravenous fluid therapy and glucose management of sick neonates.
  • Describe the detrimental effects of hypothermia, candidates for therapeutic hypothermia and interventions to decrease the incidence of hypothermia.
  • Identify respiratory distress in the neonate, labs, tests, interpretation and treatment of respiratory illnesses and airway challeng+B4es.
  • Describe the causes and treatment goals for neonates suffering from hypovolemic, obstructive, cardiogenic and septic shock.
  • Identify the prenatal and postnatal risk factors for infection, the clinical signs of neonatal sepsis, and the significance of Complete Blood Count (CBC) interpretation and initial antibiotic treatment for an infant with suspected infection.
  • Identify methods healthcare providers can support parents of sick infants who require care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or requiring transport to another facility.
