THE SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL
Hey Spellbounders! Back by popular demand, the long-awaited return of the SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL will happen on SATURDAY 17th JANUARY! Hairspray? Check. Eyeliner? Check. White greasepaint? Check. Entirely black wardrobe (with possible concessions made to a touch of purple, or frilly white lace)? Check. This month, instead of playing one or two of The Sisters Of Mercy's greatest hits, we'll play pretty much ALL of them. Same goes for Siouxsie And The Banshees, Bauhaus and The Cramps, plus the best of The Cult and The Cure's, shall we say, darker periods. This will be the Spellbound where if you ask for, I dunno, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry or Lords Of The New Church or March Violets, we'll actually say "Yeah, OK!" instead of "Um, maybe..." You can also expect to hear the likes of Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, Fields Of The Nephilim, X-Mal Deutschland, The Birthday Party, Joy Division, Danielle Dax, The Damned, Christian Death, Theatre Of Hate, Skeletal Family, Ghost Dance, Sex Gang Children, DAF, The Mission, The Chameleons, James Ray & The Performance, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Bolshoi, The Creatures, Gene Loves Jezebel, Nitzer Ebb, Virgin Prunes, Killing Joke, Front 242 etc etc (and we'll ensure that whatever non-gothic stuff we play is suitably Batcave-friendly in mood). And don't sit in front of the smoke machine, because it'll very much be in use. Alright, let's get gothed out of our tiny minds!
WHAT SPELLBOUND IS ABOUT
Firmly established as one of Brighton's best-loved monthly clubs, SPELLBOUND - The Alternative 80s Night - happens on (usually) the third Saturday of every month in the Studio Bar of Komedia. This is the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights. If you want to hear Madonna, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson or Wham!, look somewhere else. There are other clubs for that. Spellbound is a completely different type of 80s club. Instead of the cheese and kitsch you get an an average 80s night, DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) & JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) play Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth and Ska classics 1979-1989 (see list below). It's just like walking into your actual local alternative club at any random point in the 80s, right down to the smoke and the snakebite. A proper drinking and dancing session with a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it afresh. And look out for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel...
THE SOUNDS
You want names? Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Clash, Soft Cell, The Cramps, The Human League, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Talking Heads, Joy Division, The Specials, Public Image Ltd, Adam & The Ants, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The B-52's, Gary Numan, Psychedelic Furs, The Cult, Dead Kennedys, Killing Joke, The Jam, The Damned, Japan, New Model Army, Dead Or Alive, Fields Of The Nephilim, Teardrop Explodes, Violent Femmes, The Fall, The Birthday Party, Devo, Associates, Fuzzbox, Simple Minds, The Beat, Spear Of Destiny, Pixies, Alien Sex Fiend and loads more. (But this month we're all about the Goth!) Check out our Spotify playlists: https://linktr.ee/SpellboundClub
INCLUSIVITY AND EQUALITY
Spellbound is proud to be a friendly and inclusive safe space for all. We take a zero tolerance approach to racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, and bigotry of any kind. This applies both to our club nights and our social media. Any unkind, discriminatory or predatory behaviour is unwelcome here and will result in swift removal from our spaces. We thank you all for respecting this policy, and for helping to make Spellbound the warm and welcoming place that it is.
ARRIVE EARLY!
We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. (Please note that admission on the door is CASH ONLY. There is a cash machine at Tesco on Jubilee St and HSBC at the corner of Bond St and North St.) However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, then ARRIVE EARLY!
CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £4.00, exclusively for Spellbound.
THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT of Cherry Sourz! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for your delicious sugary shot.
YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.
FUTURE EVENTS
We’ll be back on Sat 21 Feb (Depeche Mode Special!) and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2026. When buying tickets for future Spellbounds, please bear in mind that some of them may have special themes. Watch our social media @SpellboundClub for announcements.
But for now…
See you on the 17th!
