ABOUT THE "THE SPECTRUM OF TENSION" WORKSHOP
How do we awaken the body as a vessel for storytelling? This movement-based devising workshop explores Lecoq’s States of Tension as a tool for physical storytelling, character development, and ensemble creation. Through guided improvisation, sensory activation, and dynamic play, we’ll move between ease and extremity, discovering how shifts in tension shape movement, presence, and emotional texture. We’ll also sprinkle in Fosse’s precision and dynamism, exploring how stylized movement enhances storytelling.
Ideal for dancers, actors, and movement artists looking to expand their expressive range, this workshop prioritizes physical exploration over text. Participants should bring a short scene (30-60 seconds) from a play or screenplay—a simple entrance-event-exit moment rather than a monologue. Examples:
- Macbeth encounters the three witches, hears their prophecy, reacts, and exits.
- Stanley overhears Blanche talking, enters, confronts her, and she leaves in distress.
- Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, helps him down, he stumbles, and they exit together.
Some movement experience is helpful, but all bodies ready to play are welcome.
