John Simm is among the UK's leading actors, particularly on television, and is most known for the series' Life on Mars and Grace, as the lead character, based on Peter James' novels. Doctor Who fans know him for his maniacal portrayal of the Master in seven episodes of the series, between 2007 to 2017.
John has starred as the police detective Roy Grace in the Brighton-based ITV crime drama since 2021 and early onscreen appearances include Rumple of the Bailey, The Bill, Cracker and Heartbeat. His first series as a main character was the acclaimed BBC drama The Lakes, in two series', from 1997 to 1999, written by Jimmy McGovern, as was The Village, which saw him starring alongside the likes of Maxine Peake. John also prominently appaeared in the first episode of the renowned writer's Clocking Off, first broadcast 25 years-ago. A regular in its cast, Philip Glenister co-starred with him in the highly popular series Life on Mars. John played Sam Tyler, a police detective who, after a car accident, ends up in 1973. State of Play, was a BBC mini-series about corruption in the government, which saw him alongside David Morrissey, Bill Nighy and Kelly Macdonald.
He is also known for the 1999 coming-of-age film Human Traffic, about relationships within a culture of drugs and clubbing. Other films include 24 Hour Party People, as the musician Bernard Sumner, and Wonderland, directed by Michael Winterbottom. For the stage, John's diverse roles have included Hamlet, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic last year, Macbeth, and Lenny in Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. He received Best Actor BAFTA nominations for the series' Exile and for Life on Mars.
