***The workshops are drop-ins, but we hope everyone can make the first session on the 4 June to bring people together and explain where we have gone so far. It will be possible to attend the others if you don’t come on the 4 June. We will create a catch-up sheet to bring you up to speed, but try your best to make this first one if possible.
The Songbird story so far…
In early 2022 Brighton People’s Theatre ran four day-long workshops at the Attenborough Centre (ACCA) which planted the seeds of a new family friendly music. During this first round of workshops over 94 creative people from across Brighton met and contributed to the early stages of the show’s development.
In these 26 workshops, we explored the world of the show, created characters, talked about broader themes, explored movement, set-design and costumes. It was an amazing thing to witness the creativity of everyone who turned up, and so much of this work is has been taken through to the next stage of the show’s development.
In the last year, we have continued conversations with Lou Cope, BPT’s dramaturg to get to the heart of the question but what’s the show really about? And through these conversations, we are now a bit closer to being able to write a first draft.
This is where we need your help. Now we have a clearer idea of the show, the world and the structure of the story, we want to workshop some of these ideas.
These workshops will be a mixture of things. They will be a place to play and connect with other people as we explore the show and the world. They will be a testing ground for new scenes and songs. They’ll be a place where people can contribute to the writing of the show as we develop a first draft.
We are hoping to have a finished draft ready for a first read-through by September 2024. And with your help we think we can get there.
So come join us. If you are interested in getting involved in a BPT show, this is the chance to meet and find a creative community in Brighton and have a say in how the show develops.
