Sipping tea, eating sunflower seeds, and watching cheerful drama on a colorful stage in front of a temple- this Chou-Shen Drama (酬神戲) scene is a fond memory of many Taiwaners. A Chou-Shen Drama is an event for thanking the divine's blessing. It is among the most cherished memories for kids born before the 80s.
The Taiwanese Hakkas have distinctive forms of entertainment, just like many other ethnic groups in Taiwan. The two primary forms of Hakkas Drama are the Hakka Grand Opera 客家大戲 and its origin, the Hakka Tea-Picking Opera 客家採茶戲. Hakkas Drama was once immensely popular and gained many fans within and outside the Hakka community.
Tea and Taiwanese Hakkas are intertwined. The Hakkas community has been planting tea for generations in north-western Taiwan's MiaoLi and HsinChu counties. So, people often associate Hakka culture with the scene of tea pickers passing throw rows of tea trees, singing out loud to each other from neighboring hills. Over the last 200 years, many tea-picking songs have been sung and preserved. These songs became the basis of stage musicals, evolved into Hakka Tea-Picking Opera, and finally developed into Hakka Grand Opera.
Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe is the most esteemed Hakka Troupe in Taiwan. The Troupe performs the authentic Hakka Tea-Picking Opera, in which actors sing the tea-picking songs with the rich and complex traditional technique, the "nine tones and eighteen tunes 九腔十八調."
For this event, a 30-minute performance of 4 Taiwanese Hakka Tea-Picking Opera segments will be shown:
• Hakka Eight-Tone Music: "Wind and Percussion Music"
• Tea-Picking Opera mixed Luan-Tan Opera: "The Blessing of the Earth Dragon"
• Hakka Eight-Tone Music: "Silk String Music: Wine Making"
• A section of the Tea-Picking Opera: "Serving Tea"
This is a rare opportunity to experience the award-winning authentic Taiwanese Hakka Tea-Picking Opera Troupe led by one of the best Hakka Musicians in Taiwan, Prof. Cheng, Rom-Shing.
Over the years, Prof. Cheng, Rom-Shing has won the Folk Art Heritage Award, the Award for Successfully Promoting Social Education in Art and Culture, and many other recolonizations offered by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education of Taiwan. In addition, for six consecutive years from 2014 to 2020, the Troupe won Golden Melody Awards for Best Performance, Best Audio, and Video Production in Traditional Musical Performing Arts category. In 2022, to honor his lifelong contribution to preserving and promoting Taiwanese Hakka PA YIN, Prof. Cheng, Rom-Shing has been accorded the highest craftsmanship status in Taiwan, "Taiwan's Treasure 人間國寶."
