“Well, Clarice – have the lambs stopped screaming?”
*****************************************************************
The late, great maverick director Jonathan Demme was behind a remarkable, diverse canon of work – but his cinematic legacy may remain most deeply tied to his iconic 1991 film THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, one of the top American movies of that decade. Based on Thomas Harris’ cult 80s novel of the same name, Demme’s masterfully precise, exquisitely gory and infinitely compelling psychological suspense thriller THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was both a major commercial blockbuster and an enormous critical hit – it is the only horror film to ever win a Best Picture Oscar and one of only three films to sweep Best Director, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Join us to toast and honour this legendary filmmaker with a Friday Late Night Movie screening of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI’s training academy. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out.
“Director Jonathan Demme‘s smart, taut thriller teeters on the edge between psychological study and all-out horror, and benefits greatly from stellar performances by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
“Slams you like a sudden blast of bone-chilling, pulse-pounding terror… A powerhouse that shows Demme at his best and boldest.” (Rolling Stone)
“Demme’s breakthrough film is a triumph by virtue of its narrative strength, its sheer confidence in tackling [Thomas] Harris‘ complex characterisation head-on, and its ability to scare the shit out of its audience without ever once resorting to amateur hour frightwigs and hands-over-the-eyes. Fingerlickin’ good.” (Empire Magazine)
