Calcutta has always been an expanding city. So where did people go when the white, black, and grey towns were filled up? Discover a unique neighbourhood around the Dhakuria Lake and learn how Calcutta created its own residential art deco niche here. Learn the story of new settlers in this area when national and global events reflected in their living choices.See and taste the cosmopolitan heritage of this neighbourhood. Our walk route was home to the city's south Indian population at one time. See their imprint and legacies. On our route, we will visit three temples whose history is woven into the fabric of the community.
We will end the walk with an adda at a cafe where you will taste Himalayan coffee and a snack from the kitchen of a special barista (included in the fare but you are free to order yourself more). We will spend an hour at the cafe (included in the walk time), where we will discuss art deco, about the community settled in the area, and talk with our engaging hostess about her Himalayan coffee tales.
