VENUE HISTORY :
Maxine’s in Hot Springs was originally a notorious brothel run by madam Maxine Temple Jones, which served a wealthy and powerful clientele during the city’s heyday. Today, the name refers to a modern restaurant and music venue, Maxine’s Live, built on the site of the old brothel. Maxine Temple Jones’s story is famously detailed in her autobiography, Maxine: “Call Me Madam”. Born Dora Maxine Temple, she became a well-known madam in Hot Springs, managing a successful brothel for about 20 years. The brothel catered to a diverse and powerful group, including prominent businessmen, organized crime figures, federal judges, and members of Congress. She started her career in Texarkana before moving to Hot Springs in 1948, where she eventually bought her own house of prostitution in 1950. She wrote an autobiography, Maxine: “Call Me Madam”. The book details her life and experiences running the business. It also sheds light on the corruption and criminal element that were part of Hot Springs during that era. Jones retired in 1983. The city eventually shut down its illegal gambling operations, and the era of prominent organized crime in Hot Springs came to an end. The location has been converted into a modern restaurant and live music venue called Maxine’s Live. It is one of the many unique spots in Hot Springs that pay homage to the city’s colorful past.
