About this Event
In ancient times a sanctuary was regarded a sacred place. In Sesa Mathlo Apothecary, The Sanctuary is our weekly African Kemetic Yoga class. It is a space to remember and reconnect with our bodies as the sanctuaries they are.
Our theme for May is a deep dive into the Pose of Auset, one of the key postures in Kemetic Yoga.
Auset, commonly known as Isis, is the Ntr that represents devotion, care and nurture. Often referred to as the ‘Mother of all living things’ or the ‘Water of life and fertility’, Auset’s story is one of trusting and surrendering to the process.
The pose of Auset is an invitation to nurture the physical, mental and spiritual space we cultivate and call in/seed our desires, goals and intentions. It is an invitation to tend to our creative energy and capacity. The sequence strengthens and lengthens the muscles that protect the spine, increasing circulation and aiding digestion. As the practice involves gentle spinal twists it releases tension in the chest, opening up the lungs and heart centre.

What is African Kemetic Yoga?
Kemetic Yoga is an African form of yoga that was practiced by the ancients for physical, mental and spiritual development. The postures in Kemetic Yoga mirror and are based on the Sesh Medew Netcher, which are the inscriptions of wisdom or hieroglyphs found in present day Egypt. These inscriptions predate 10,000 plus years.
Baba Yiser Hotep & Dr Asar Hapi rediscovered the practice in the 70s and it is a much slower style of yoga that places emphasis on geometric progression and rhythmic deep breathing. African Kemetic Yoga by Mut Ursula builds on Kemetic Yoga by diving into African cosmologies, the history of the dynasties & transliterating the hieroglyphics. This is with the intention to connect the links between Ancient Kemet, the Indus Kush civilisation and traditional African knowledge systems.
