The Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado tells the story of Barbara Allen through interwoven ballads, songs, and dance tunes from the theaters of London to the porches of Appalachian homesteads.
Perhaps the most indelible legacy we have from the Scotch-Irish and English immigrants to early America is their folk music. Along with their infectious tunes they brought a rich and other-worldly ballad repertoire that took on the flavors and sounds of their new wild mountain home over the centuries. Today there is no more lasting or haunting ballad than Barbara Allen. First referenced in seventeenth-century England as “a little Scotch tune”, this timeless tale comes down to us in many variations, along with many sibling songs, all connected by the imagery of an intertwined rose and briar representing everlasting love in the face of tragedy. Musicians include Cynthia Miller Freivogel and Carla Sciaky and talented members of the Chivalrous Crickets.
