Two thousand years ago, Carlisle was a Roman city. This May, the Romans return.Step into the world of Roman Carlisle with a vibrant celebration of history, creativity and hands-on discovery in the heart of the city.
Inspired by recent archaeological discoveries across Carlisle, the festival brings together archaeologists, reenactors, artists and community groups celebrates the stories, people and beliefs that shaped the city nearly two thousand years ago.
Across the day visitors can expect a lively programme full of family fun including:
- Roman soldier processions around the city centre
- Roman camp in Tullie gardens
- Roman herbalist stall in Tullie Gardens
- Collaborative artwork in Carlisle City Centre – help us build a Roman Temple
- Roman crafts
- Roman storytelling
- Tours of ‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle: Where Worlds Met’ at Tullie (museum admission charges apply)
Activity will take place in Tullie and in Carlisle’s City Centre. All events are free, however museum admission does apply for events taking place on the galleries at Tullie.
Whether you are fascinated by Roman history, curious about archaeology, or simply looking for a great family day out, The Romans Return offers a chance to experience Carlisle’s past in new and unexpected ways.
