In celebration of #FreedomWalk2026, we will gather at the Family Partnership Center parking lot, across from the Center at 29 North Hamilton St, for a walk which will highlight the places of worship and people that were influential in the anti-slavery movement, including Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church, the First Congregational Church and Second Baptist Church. This walk is part of #FreedomWalk2026 is a modern-day retracing of the Underground Railroad celebrating the 30th anniversary of Historian Anthony Michael Cohen’s inaugural journey of the same route. We are excited that Poughkeepsie was chosen as one of only ten cities where Tony and his team will establish their base of operations!
#FreedomWalk2026 envisions a nation where America’s unfinished story is completed to form a more just and perfect union. Uniting the past and present we seek to re-ignite the ideals of “We the People,” sparking inspiration for future generations to secure equity, justice, and liberation for all.
