Back by popular demand! Two more opportunities to experience the soundscape of Revolutionary Paris live with Peter Sheppard Skaerved. Free to attend; no registration required.
Alongside the exhibition Revolution à la Mode: Fashion and Music in Revolutionary France, Peter Sheppard Skaerved partnered with Mia to make new recordings of songs long lost to history.
November 30th: Violinists and Visitors in the Revolutionary Salon
Music by: Gluck, Kreutzer, Tartini, Rode, Mestrino, Viotti, Rouget de Lisle, Boucher, Cartier & Rode. Plus, a new work by Michael Alec Rose.
Violinists dominated musical life in Revolutionary Paris. They directed orchestras, founded conservatories and theaters, and wrote much of the music that fired up the new republic. Peter brings back these virtuosos for an imaginary reunion, playing in front of a portrait by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, whose gatherings in her London and Paris homes were magnets for artists and intellectuals.
December 6th: Harp and Violin in the Revolutionary Salon
Music by: Krumpholtz, Gluck, Baillot, Marie Antoinette, Petrini, and de Genlis. Plus, works from ‘le Journal de la Mode et du Gout, ou amusements du salon at de la toilette,’ featured in the exhibition.
One of the stars of “Revolution a la Mode” is an 18th Century French harp. For this performance, Peter is joined by harpist Amy Nam to explore the dialogues around their instruments in the revolutionary drawing rooms.
