About this Event
For decades, Chinese restaurants have been one of the most misunderstood parts of the food scene in Europe. Greasy takeaways, MSG scares, dubious headlines. The prejudice ran deep — and it had a name: Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.
But something has shifted. Over the past five or six years, a new wave of Chinese food has taken over cities across Europe. Concept restaurants, high-end Cantonese dining, reinvented traiteurs — Chinese cuisine has become a cultural reference.
On June 10th, Koï — the independent media dedicated to Asian cultures and diasporas — invites you to Station F for an evening that explores this transformation.
What to expect
We will screen extracts from the documentary by Chin Taylor, British-Malaysian YouTube sensation and passionate MSG advocate, whose film traces the fascinating and often infuriating history of MSG — from its invention in Japan to its demonisation in the West, and its quiet rehabilitation today.
A panel of guests from the French and British food scenes will take the conversation further: How did Chinese cuisine go from stereotype to cultural capital? What does it mean to cook Chinese food in Europe today, without apology?
And to close the evening — a tasting. Chinese bites, MSG included, proudly.
