Join us in this stimulating dialogue between NEO HAI BIN, a young arts practitioner, and Dr LEE CHEE KENG, one of the core members of Theatre OX.

Re-crafting Ancient Texts for OX's Performers discusses the ancient texts and mythologies used in Theatre OX, as well as how these texts were adapted dramaturgically for the performances. It is an opportunity to discover how these texts can transcend time, space and genre, and offer us insights into the wisdom of nature and being.

About Theatre OX

Theatre OX (1995-2007) was one of the first ensemble-based theatre collectives in Singapore, known for their unconventional performances, which incorporated rich cultural sources with Western theatrical approaches. The group was renowned for their systematic and laborious training in pursuit of performance craft. Theatre OX had ventured to various theatre companies in Poland and was the resident theatre group at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, Italy in 1998. In time, some of the OX members continued to work as individual actors under one branch of the research at the Workcenter, The Bridge - Developing Theatre Arts (1999 - 2006).

老牛剧场(1995-2007)是新加坡以演员为核心的剧团之一。演出经常在非正规场地进行,并将这些丰富的文化资源与西方戏剧形式结合在一起。“老牛”也以有系统、持之以恒、身体力行的训练驰名。 他们曾远赴波兰多个剧团进行戏剧考察,并于1998年成为意大利耶日.格罗托夫斯基和托马斯·理查兹工作中心的常驻剧团。之后,一些成员在该中心之“桥梁-发展戏剧艺术 (1999-2006)及/或 “艺乘” 继续研习。



About Dr LEE CHEE KENG
Dr Lee Chee Keng received his BA (Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies) and MA (Japanese Studies) from National University of Singapore, and his DLitt from Central Academy of Drama, Beijing. While he also writes, translates and occasionally acts, his creative practice is anchored in theatre making, directing and actor training. Dr Lee’s theatre is inspired by his appreciation of Asian traditional forms as well as his systematic study of Stanislavski system during his years at the Central Academy of Drama. He gleans from the influences that form his theatre worldview to develop kinesthetic and perceptual awareness in the performance of actors who work with him. He is excited to be part of the Yale-NUS community, and looks to humanising, experiencing and examining issues around us through theater making.

About NEO HAI BIN
Neo Hai Bin is currently a writer and a theatre practitioner. His literary practice involves research works in social issues and the human condition, which then translates into different forms of literary expressions: scripts, prose, critiques or short stories. His literary works can be found at thethoughtspavilion.wordpress.com.
Some of his plays include 招: When the Cold Wind Blows (Singapore Theatre Festival 2018), Cut Kafka! (Esplanade Huayi Festival Commission 2018), Merdeka / 獨立 /சுதந்திரம் (Wild Rice, with Alfian Sa’at, 2019), and Tanah•Air 水•土: A Play in Two Parts (Devised with Drama Box, 2019). He is part of the theatre reviewers team “劇讀:thea.preter” since 2017. He co-founded “微.Wei Collective” with lighting designer Liu Yong Huay.
