Dr Kristy Slominski discusses the intersection of the religious, sexual, and health history of basketball and Kellogg's cornflakes.About this Event
This talk will focus on the intersection of the religious, sexual, and health contexts in the United States that shaped the creation of two commonplace cultural phenomena: basketball and Kellogg’s cornflakes. This research is part of Dr Kristy Slominski’s current book project, The Religious and Sexual Pasts of Common Objects. She will show how these objects can serve as a window into a past where Christian reformers developed team sports and hearty breakfasts as part of sexual health campaigns to control male urges and promote a Christian vision for healthy living.
