About this Event
The Rebel Run 5K Returns | Running Black History Forward
Event Summary
Saturday, February 7, 2026 marks the 4th Red, Black & Green (RBG) Rebel Run 5K, a Black History Month celebration rooted in the historic Hannibal Square community of Winter Park, Florida.
Founded in 2021, the Rebel Run 5K was created to honor Hannibal Barca, the legendary North African military general and namesake of Hannibal Square—Winter Park’s historically Black neighborhood. Designed for runners and walkers of all ages and paces, the Rebel Run blends fitness, history, and cultural pride into one powerful community experience.
This year’s return carries special significance. After multiple years of interrupted programming and funding vetoes affecting Black History Month initiatives statewide, the Rebel Run reemerges through grassroots determination, community support, and collective resilience.
This Is a Red, Black & Green Color Run
Participants are encouraged to run, walk, and celebrate wearing red, black, and green—the colors of the Pan-African flag.
These colors represent:
- Red — the blood and sacrifice of African ancestors
- Black — the people of the African diaspora
- Green — the land, hope, and future
Running in red, black, and green transforms the course into a moving tribute to Pan-African unity, cultural pride, and historical continuity.

Why Your Participation Matters
In recent years, funding for the Rebel Run 5K and the broader 1619Fest Orlando Black History Month celebration was vetoed by Governor Ron DeSantis. These decisions reduced resources for cultural education, historical recognition, and community-centered programming.
As a result:
- Public funding was eliminated
- Programming opportunities were scaled back
- Organizers relied on volunteers and private support to continue
Yet, the Rebel Run persists—because our history is not optional.
To continue hosting the Rebel Run 5K in partnership with the City of Winter Park, a minimum of 150 registered participants is required. Reaching this threshold is essential to ensure the race remains approved, supported, and able to return in future years.
Your registration is not just an entry—it is a vote for visibility, access, and representation for the historic Hannibal Square community.
If you believe in preserving Black history and cultural space in Winter Park:
- Register early
- Invite friends, family, and teammates
- Share the race within your networks
Every participant helps secure the future of the Rebel Run and ensures that Hannibal Square continues to be honored through movement, history, and community pride.
Be a Part of History
The Rebel Run 5K is more than a race.
It is a moving declaration that Black history, culture, and community traditions will continue—regardless of obstacles.
Register, wear your red, black, and green, and run history forward.
