The Putnam Chorale Ensemble presents a stirring new program to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, “An American Tapestry”. This concert, presented under the direction of Maestro Jason Tramm, traces the musical story of the United States from its earliest colonial roots to the soaring anthems of the 20th century. The program features radiant lyricism in Samuel Barber’s "Sure on This Shining Night," the bold revolutionary spirit of William Billings’s "David’s Lamentation" and Chester, and the open-hearted folk traditions of Aaron Copland’s beloved "Simple Gifts", "At the River", and "Zion’s Walls." Together, these works reflect a young nation finding its voice through faith, poetry, and the
music of everyday people.
The journey continues with Randall Thompson’s powerful "Testament of Freedom", setting the words of Thomas Jefferson to music. Then you'll hear Leonard Bernstein’s unforgettable choral writing—from the innocence of "Simple Song" to the triumphant hope of "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide. Spirituals such as "Deep River" and "Roll, Jordan, Roll", honor the African-American musical heritage, before the program culminates in Wilhousky’s thrilling "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
An American Tapestry is a celebration of the ideals, struggles, and shared dreams that continue to shape the American story. Senior and student tickets are $12; adult tickets are $15. Children 12 and under are free. A dessert reception will follow the concert.
