For its late Spring and Summer season, the Putnam Chorale Ensemble will present a stirring new program to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. “An American Tapestry”, presented under the direction of Maestro Jason Tramm, traces the musical story of the United States from its earliest colonial roots to the soaring anthems of the 20th century. The program features radiant lyricism in Samuel Barber’s Sure on This Shining Night, the bold revolutionary spirit of William Billings’s David’s Lamentation and Chester, and the open-hearted folk traditions of Aaron Copland’s beloved Simple Gifts, At the River, and Zion’s Walls. Together, these works reflect a young nation finding its voice through faith, poetry, and the music of everyday people.

The journey continues with Randall Thompson’s powerful Testament of Freedom, setting the words of Thomas Jefferson, and Leonard Bernstein’s unforgettable choral writing—from the innocence of Simple Song to the triumphant hope of Make Our Garden Grow from Candide. Spirituals such as Deep River and Roll, Jordan, Roll honor America’s African-American musical heritage, before the program culminates in Wilhousky’s thrilling Battle Hymn of the Republic. An American Tapestry is a celebration of the ideals, struggles, and shared dreams that continue to shape the American story.
