Drawing on themes from his most recent two books, The Way We Are and Just Saying, Hugh will explore the social trends that have been reshaping our society, eroding social cohesion and leading to epidemics of loneliness, anxiety and depression. He will remind us of our true human nature as members of a social species, and of our deep need of belonging. He will argue that kindness is not just ‘a nice thing to do’; it’s actually a species survival skill. Described as ‘the man who explains us to ourselves’, Hugh Mackay is a social psychologist and the bestselling author of twenty-five books, including The Way We Are, The Kindness Revolution and nine novels. His latest book is Just Saying, a series of personal reflections on 25 famous quotations.
He had a sixty-year career in social research and was for thirty years a weekly newspaper columnist. He is currently an honorary professor at ANU.
In recognition of his pioneering work in social research, he has been awarded honorary doctorates by five Australian universities and in 2016 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.
